Physical Therapy (PT)

A smiling man raises his left arm by the elbow and holds a blue weight in his hand. Behind him, a female physical therapist guides him in his exercises

Trinity Health Michigan is home to licensed physical therapists who help people move through life with less pain. We are in locations throughout Southeast and West Michigan, making it easier to fit therapy into your busy schedule. Whether you need treatments to avoid surgery or help getting back on your feet after a recent procedure, we are here for you.

Physical Therapy at Trinity Health Michigan: Why Choose Us?

Physical therapists work closely with doctors, surgeons and other specialists to deliver personalized care. We frequently coordinate with primary care physicians, orthopedic surgeons, pain management specialists, neurologists and cancer specialists. Our careful attention to your therapy needs and progress toward milestones helps you get back to your favorite activities.

We explain your treatment plan and guide you through every step. Some of our clinics have large therapy gyms and a spa-like environment. They feature various equipment, including barbells, dumbbells and an antigravity treadmill. The treadmill helps people with lower extremity issues safely get back on their feet earlier in their recovery.

Who Is PT For?

Our team regularly cares for people with a broad range of conditions, including:

What to Expect During Physical Therapy

Our therapists begin your care with an evaluation that assesses movement, muscle strength, weak spots and readiness for physical activity. Even if you are new to exercise, we help you feel comfortable so that you have a good experience.

Your personalized PT plan may include:

  • Exercise to improve strength, range of motion and joint mobility
  • Stretching to improve flexibility and circulation and relax stiff muscles
  • Manual therapy, such as soft tissue massage and joint mobilization to relieve pain, reduce scar tissue buildup and improve movement
  • Modalities such as heat and cold therapy, electrical stimulation and therapeutic ultrasound
  • Mechanical traction, gentle pulling and stretching to relieve pressure from the spine
  • Education about form and posture to help reduce muscle strain and prevent future injury

Specialized Physical Therapy Services

Our comprehensive approach includes special services, some of which are not widely available in the region. Therapists with additional training deliver care that targets specific issues and injuries.

Specialized PT services are available in select clinic locations and include:

Balance Training

Balance training is for people with medical conditions that leave them feeling unsteady on their feet. These conditions include concussions, scoliosis, sports injuries, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and certain neurological disorders. We use vestibular therapy, resistance training and Tai Chi to improve stability and confidence.

Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) BIG®

People living with Parkinson’s disease or other neurological conditions often move differently, with gestures and actions that become smaller and slower. They may have trouble with getting around, getting dressed and with other activities of daily living. LSVT BIG® effectively trains improved movements for any activity, whether “small motor” tasks like buttoning a shirt or “large motor” tasks like getting up from sofa or chair or maintaining balance while walking.

The treatment improves walking, self-care, and other tasks by helping people “recalibrate” how they perceive their movements with what others actually see. It also teaches them how and when to apply extra effort to produce bigger motions – more like the movements of everyone around them. LSVT BIG® trains people with Parkinson’s disease to use their body more naturally.

Lymphedema Therapy

Lymphedema therapy helps you get relief from abnormal fluid buildup in lymph vessels. Lymph is a fluid that’s part of your immune system. Excessive lymph from conditions such as cancer, venous disease and obesity is painful and makes it difficult to move. Our team includes therapists with special training in techniques that help drain the excess fluid.

Orthopedic Rehabilitation

Physical therapy is often a part of orthopedic rehabilitation, a more intensive approach to severe injury or surgery recovery. In addition to physical therapy, you may also receive occupational therapy services. We may provide bedside care in the initial stages of healing and in outpatient clinics as you get better. Explore orthopedic rehabilitation.

Pediatric Rehabilitation

Some of our therapists specialize in treating children. We commonly care for children with severe injuries or lasting discomfort. Our expertise also helps children with developmental delays who aren’t reaching milestones, like crawling or walking, as expected.

We deliver specialized care to newborns, children and adolescents that includes:

  • Early intervention for newborns and infants with physical development problems
  • Evaluations and fittings for wheelchairs and special walkers (gait devices)
  • One-on-one play-based care
  • Serial casting and taping to guide limbs into a more natural position gently

Pelvic Floor Therapy

This treatment helps people overcome pelvic floor dysfunction. The pelvic floor is a muscle group in the pelvis that supports the bladder, bowel, uterus and vagina. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles in the pelvis that help support the bladder, bowel, uterus, and vagina. Dysfunction can occur when the muscles have increased tone or decreased tone.

With pelvic floor dysfunction, you may experience pain, weakness, or coordination of your muscles. Pelvic floor problems may include but are not limited to urinary and fecal incontinence (male and female) pain during intercourse for females, pain in abdomen or lower pelvis as well. Pelvic floor therapy can help strengthen or decrease spasms of muscles to improve their ability to do their job. We deliver this service in a private setting.
