Occupational Therapy (OT)

A smiling man raises his left arm by the elbow and holds a blue weight in his hand. Behind him, a female physical therapist guides him in his exercises

Some severe illnesses and injuries can impact your abilities. You may struggle to complete once-simple daily living skills, like getting dressed or feeding yourself. Occupational therapy (OT) from Trinity Health Michigan maximizes your function and independence.

You receive care from occupational therapists who use various techniques to help you overcome challenges. Our personalized approach helps you achieve your goals so that you can perform the tasks that matter most to you.

Our Occupational Therapy Services

Occupational therapists help adults and children develop the skills necessary to complete activities of daily living. Services also include sophisticated assessments to determine whether you need additional therapies or lifestyle modifications. We help identify your needs and use research-based methods to help you achieve treatment milestones.

Our occupational therapy services include:

Developmental Pediatrics

These services are for children who are not reaching developmental milestones as expected. A child may have issues affecting their ability to move, think, speak or use their limbs. Occupational therapists use pediatric techniques to help children overcome these challenges.

Driving Assessments

Therapists assess the effects of illness or injury on a person’s ability to control a vehicle safely. We often recommend modifications such as special mirrors or technologies that enhance visibility. Our services help more people maintain their driver’s license.

Services involve:

  • Off-road assessments to evaluate physical and cognitive skills necessary for driving
  • Driving test with an occupational therapist, during which patients demonstrate their driving skills

Fall Prevention

Fall prevention techniques help people with medical or neurologic conditions that increase the likelihood of falling. This risk can make you fearful of a fall during everyday activities, like taking stairs or going to the store. Our occupational therapists aim to restore your confidence so you can live a full life.

We teach you how to detect and manage potential fall risks at home and in the community. Therapists also include gentle physical activity to improve your strength and flexibility.

Hand Therapy

Our team includes certified hand therapists (CHTs) who treat a broad range of upper extremity issues. Hand and arm injuries can be complex, involving nerves, joints and soft tissue. CHTs often provide care after trauma or surgery.

Your care may include custom splints that position the arm, wrist, hand or fingers in a specific way to promote healing. We also help you gradually increase motion and regain function in injured or damaged areas to keep your recovery moving forward.

Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT)

Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions affect muscles all over the body. Parkinson’s can make your voice softer (difficult to hear) and movements slower, even if you don’t realize it. Our LSVT-certified physical and occupational therapists deliver gold-standard treatment that optimizes your ability to move, while speech therapists focus on increasing vocal loudness.

LSVT BIG® is an innovative, holistic approach to movement issues. Our specially trained therapists teach you the amount of effort required to produce normal movements. They also help you translate bigger movements into real-world, everyday activities, such as walking and self-care.

Low Vision Therapy

We use various techniques to help people with severe vision loss safely navigate their surroundings. Therapy may include:

  • Finding household appliances with setting buttons and switches that are easy to see
  • Learning how to use electronic magnification devices at home and out in the community
  • Showing you how to scan your surroundings and use a long cane to detect potential fall hazards

Stroke Rehabilitation

We help you relearn skills necessary for activities of daily living after a stroke, like getting in and out of bed. Trinity Health Michigan offers inpatient, outpatient and intensive day programs. Explore neurorehabilitation.

You also have access to stroke support groups where you can discuss challenges and share victories with fellow survivors. Find out more about nationally recognized stroke care at Trinity Health Michigan.
