What Is Heart Failure?

Heart failure (also called congestive heart failure) occurs when the heart can’t pump enough blood for the organs, muscles and tissues in the body to function properly. Heart failure can happen for a variety of reasons, including coronary artery diseaseAFib and structural heart and valve problems. Most people with heart failure are older and have heart disease, though younger people with congenital heart issues can also develop the condition.

Symptoms of heart failure include shortness of breath, fluid retention, fatigue and fast heartbeat. You may also notice that your legs are swollen because your circulatory system is struggling to move blood and fluid through your body. Although there is no cure for heart failure, we can help you avoid hospitalizations and feel better.

  • Emphasis on education: We’re passionate about helping you adopt diet and lifestyle habits that can make a big difference in your quality of life. Our dietitians offer practical nutrition advice, recipes and tips for healthier living. We want you to feel empowered, so you can understand your treatments and make healthier choices.
