What Is AFib?

AFib is the most common type of heart arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat). It can lead to stroke and heart failure and can even be life-threatening. AFib occurs when the heart’s upper chambers beat out of sync with the lower chambers. The irregular heartbeats prevent blood from flowing effectively, which can lead to blood clots that cause stroke.

Some people with AFib have no symptoms at all, but many people feel their heart skip a beat, flutter, or beat heavily or quickly. These heart palpitations are often worse when moving around, but they can happen anytime. AFib also causes shortness of breath, dizziness and lightheadedness.

  • Tailored noninvasive treatments: Managing AFib usually involves a combination of treatments, such as medication, monitoring and lifestyle changes to lower your risk factors. Your team works closely with you to adjust medications, evaluate your progress and recommend changes to your plan. We use implanted monitoring devices that detect arrhythmias remotely so you can continue with your daily activities.

  • Sophisticated minimally invasive procedures: We are leaders in less-invasive techniques called ablations that improve your quality of life and minimize the symptoms of AFib. We also offer the WATCHMAN™ procedure as an excellent option for people who are unable to take blood-thinner medication. If you need surgery for hard-to-treat AFib, we provide advanced, minimally invasive techniques.

  • Comprehensive care: Our team of arrhythmia experts knows that AFib often occurs along with many other health conditions, such as sleep apnea, lung disease and high blood pressure. We collaborate with your primary care doctor, cardiovascular surgeons and other specialists. You’ll receive customized care based on your specific health concerns.
