Structural Heart Disease

A woman and her grandmother stroll happily through a park

At Trinity Health Michigan, we’re proud to offer life-changing treatments for structural heart and valve disease. Time and again, we’ve seen the significant impact these procedures can have on our patients’ quality of life and overall health.

Our experienced team of cardiologists uses the latest technology to diagnose and treat a wide range of heart and valve conditions. We are committed to helping you find a way to better heart health.

What Is Structural Heart and Valve Disease?

Problems with the structure of the heart and valves can be congenital (present at birth) or they can develop over time. Some people are born with holes in their heart or abnormal valves. Structural abnormalities such as these can affect the heart’s function and cause a range of health problems.

When the valves of the heart don’t work properly, the heart can’t pump enough blood to the rest of the body. Sometimes, valves don’t open as they should, so blood can’t flow through the heart. In other cases, the valves don’t close properly, causing blood to leak or flow the wrong way.

We specialize in catheter-based procedures to treat all structural heart and valve conditions, including:

  • Severe aortic stenosis: A narrowing of the opening of the aortic valve

  • Mitral valve stenosis: A narrowing of the mitral valve

  • Mitral valve regurgitation: When blood leaks backward due to the mitral valve not closing properly

  • Paravalvular leak: A leak that occurs around an artificial valve that has already been replaced

  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: Heart muscle disease that causes thickening of the heart muscle and can lead to shortness of breath, arrhythmia and heart failure

  • Atrial septal defect (ASD) and patent foremen ovale (PFO): Holes in the heart’s walls

  • Left atrial appendage (LAA) closure: When blood collects in the LAA, forming clots and increasing the risk of stroke for people with AFib

Structural Heart and Valve Care: Why Choose Us?

Our structural heart and valve specialists are highly trained and dedicated to excellence. We treat structural heart and valve disease using the latest research and innovative technologies. We’ve helped thousands of people on their journey to improved heart health, and we can help you too.

Our structural heart and valve program provides:

  • Minimally invasive treatments: We offer transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) to treat aortic stenosis. Our team performs a high number of TAVR procedures using conscious sedation. When you have conscious sedation rather than general anesthesia, you can typically return to regular activities much sooner. We also offer alcohol septal ablation for patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

  • Advanced technology: We use advanced imaging, such as CT scans, MRI, fluoroscopy and 3D transesophageal echocardiography to perform minimally invasive procedures. This technology provides detailed images in real-time, making treatment more accurate and effective. Learn more about cardiac imaging.

  • Innovative procedures: We were one of the first hospitals in the U.S. (and the only one in Michigan) to participate in clinical trials for MitraClip™, one of the latest treatments for mitral valve regurgitation. The less-invasive MitraClip is an excellent option for people who cannot have traditional valve repair surgery.

  • Patient-centered care: Our experienced nurse navigators explain procedures, answer questions and follow up after treatment. Our entire team is here to guide you through every step.
