They freely give of their time, talents, and resources to help Trinity Health Grand Haven carry out its mission. Volunteers are our most valuable assets. Volunteers can serve at Trinity Health Grand Haven Hospital, Trinity Health At Home - Hospice and/or Heartwood Lodge.

Our auxiliary was organized on September 19, 1919 and continues the tradition of:
- Volunteering service to the hospital
- Service to the community
- Raising funds to support the hospital
- Providing scholarships to students enrolled in health care programs
- Acting as hospital goodwill ambassadors in the community.
The Auxiliary is comprised of more than 100 members, including individual guilds that have specific activities and goals:
- Koster – making bunny pillows for children in Outpatient Surgery, Urgent Care and Emergency
- O'Brien – all volunteers working within the hospital, long term care & hospice
- Robinson – operation of the hospital gift shop.
All Trinity Health Grand Haven volunteers are able to become members of the Auxiliary for an annual donation.
Volunteer Opportunities
Trinity Health Grand Haven Hospital
There are a variety of volunteer opportunities available within the hospital. These service areas include the following:
Deliver mail to various departments. Responsible for sorting of incoming US Post Office mail and distributing it to appropriate departments.
Greet and assist patients and visitors as they come into the hospital (you will set the experience for these community members as you will be the first one they interact with). Assist visitors/patients with finding areas within the Hospital and Harbor Dunes by providing helpful directions to patients and visitors, escorting visitors and patients to their destination, help with discharging patients from room to transportation, delivery of flowers, newspapers and mail to patient rooms. In absence of an Ambassador, the host/hostess will remain in the main lobby to assist patients/visitors.
To assist staff as a volunteer in a clerical position in the department. Duties varied but can include data entry, answering phones, filing, making copies, putting mailings/packets together. Specific duties to be assigned
To assist patients in and out of their vehicles. Parking of a patient’s vehicle, if needed, in specific valet parking places. Transporting patient by wheelchair to designated area.
To assist visitors/patients with finding areas within the Hospital, assisting guests with locating patients within hospital. Assisting with phone calls and questions. Registering of vendors coming into the facility.
To act as a liaison with surgery patients, family members, outpatient surgery, and recovery. Assist in greeting and receiving patients and families, be a comfortable presence for patients’ families, and escort patients/families to and from the surgical lounge.
To assist customers in the selection of merchandise and gifts, taking of phone orders, restocking of items, keeping shop neat and tidy, and proper operation of the computerized cash register. Ability to balance a cash drawer at the end of a shift.
To assist visitors/patients with finding areas within the Hospital and Harbor Dunes, and assisting guests with locating patients within hospital. Discharging of patients, delivery of flowers, newspapers and mail to patient rooms. To assist hospital departments with timely delivery of departmental mail. To act as a liaison with surgery patients, family members, outpatient surgery, and recovery. Answering phones and assisting the Ambassador with questions.
The Emergency Department Volunteer is the liaison between families/significant others in the waiting room and the patient being treated. Volunteers will assist in transporting patients, stocking of supplies, filing and other paperwork as assigned, keep waiting areas neat and in order, sit with children or family members as necessary, and make phone calls. Must be currently attending an accredited college or university, pursuing a healthcare career. Night and weekend opportunities as available.
Trinity Health At Home - Hospice
- Respite Volunteer: Provide respite for families in their homes and nursing facilities
- Companionship Volunteers: Companionship visits include playing cards, life review, writing letters, and talking
- Massage Therapy: Provided by Certified Massage Therapists
- Licensed Beautician: Providing haircuts to home-bound patients provided by a licensed Cosmetologist
- Handy person: Help with minor home repairs, yard maintenance, ramp building, etc.
- Handcrafter: We are also seeking volunteers who love sewing, knitting, crocheting and quilting
Heartwood Lodge
- Visiting with patients
- Assist with resident activities: cards, games, sing-alongs, coffee groups, socialization
- Flower garden care
- Book Cart
- Special events and more

Further requirements include:
- Be at least 14 years of age.
- References - Furnish two references. Click here for the reference letter form.
- Interview - All volunteers will meet with Volunteer Services staff to discuss interests, complete paperwork and determine potential placement.
- Background Check - All volunteers 18 and over will be subject to a criminal background check.
- Meet health requirements - COVID and flu vaccine, immunization record and TB Test.
- Participate in the orientation of assigned area.
- Train with an experienced volunteer in the area assigned.
- Be flexible to service area needs and times.
- Obtain a vest and name badge from Volunteer Services and HR.
- Annual Refresher and Acknowledgement - Review of materials will be completed by volunteers annually. You will receive an email that will instruct you when to complete these assessments. If you would prefer a paper copy, please call Volunteer Services at 616-847-5612.
