Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer at Trinity Health Michigan. Our volunteers are an invaluable blessing to us as they support the care delivery team to create an excellent care experience for each patient. Our hope is that you will become a lifelong partner with Trinity Health.
We believe our volunteers help extend our mission of service to each other and the community; promote spiritual, emotional and physical well-being; and demonstrate care and compassion to those in need.
Who Can Volunteer?
A diverse group of people of all ages volunteer at Trinity Health Michigan. We have volunteers from ages 16 to 90 years old. They are students, homemakers, retirees, and workers with full-time and part-time jobs.
Volunteer Opportunities
We do our best to match your unique interests, skills and talents so that you will have a fun, rewarding volunteer experience. Opportunities may vary from campus to campus:
- Courtesy Coach Driver (Muskegon): Volunteer provides the first and lasting impression to each person as they enter and exit the hospital. The Volunteer drives the shuttle through parking lots of Trinity Health offering rides to and from the hospital to patients, visitors, and colleagues.
- Eucharistic Minister: Certified volunteers offer Holy Communion to patients that are staying in the hospital. This volunteer requires a prayerful demeanor, ability to follow prescribed rituals related to reception of Communion, and basic knowledge of appropriate referrals to professional chaplains.
- Gift Shops: Gift Shop Volunteers assist customers with their shopping needs, run cash register, stock shelves, and complete other responsibilities of the gift shop. This position is for those friendly individuals that like to interact with people and help provide retail therapy.
- Hospitality Greeter: Volunteers offer a warm welcome and resourceful presence as one of the first contacts at the hospital entrance points. The Volunteer requires outstanding communication and ability to assist patients with personal escort or navigation throughout the hospital.
- Musician: Volunteer musicians play calming music that is conducive to a healing environment for patients and visitors of Trinity Health. Volunteers will play either their own instrument or the Grand Piano in the lobby area, or, if directed by supervisor, the volunteer may visit patients on clinical units.
- Patient Advocate Liaison (PAL): PAL Volunteer role focuses on offering support to the patients on a unit. Volunteers will work with the staff to check-in with our guests and make the experience more comfortable. Some tasks include delivering newspapers/books to interested patients, talking with patients who could use a visitor, delivering warm blankets, handing out beverages to visitors, and more.
- Patient and Family Advisory Council Volunteers: Former/current patients or family members of patients at Trinity Health participate in meetings and various projects to help improve the care at Trinity Health. Through a collective effort, initiatives are created and carried out to enhance the patient experience.
- Patient and Family Resource Center (Muskegon): Trained volunteers assist patients, visitors, and colleagues with vital information on various health topics. Volunteers offer meaningful and heartfelt conversation to those that need support and information.
- Personal Care Support (Muskegon): Volunteer helps with hair, makeup and personal care support for patients primarily in the Comprehensive Breast Center and other clinical units. Currently Beautiful You supports this program in Grand Rapids.
- Pet Therapy: Certified dogs and their handlers offer companionship to patients, visitors, and colleagues throughout the hospital. The Handlers and dog promote emotional, physical, and psychological support through the human-animal healing connection.
- Reach Out and Read (Grand Rapids): Volunteer at one of our Physician Offices that serve our pediatric patients by reading to the children in the waiting room. Our program helps to provide each child with a new book at their well-child visits.
- Transport Volunteer: Transport patients being discharged to the correct exit and assist with wheelchair rounding.
- Waiting Room Liaison (Muskegon): Volunteer provides updates for family members in waiting rooms, offers conversation or prayer, and walks visitors to meet their loved ones.
How to Apply
The process begins with completing the volunteer application:
- Trinity Health Volunteer Application (Grand Rapids and Muskegon)
- Paper application available upon request
The completed application form and two references then need to be turned into Volunteer Services. Once these are received, we will contact you about an interview and coordinate the following steps:
- Complete Volunteer Orientation
- Workplace Health Appointment at our expense
- Vaccination history record
- (2) TB Tests at our expense
- Flu shot at our expense
- COVID-19 Vaccination series at our expense
- Obtain a uniform and name badge (no charge) from the Volunteer and Security offices
- Train with an experienced volunteer in the area assigned
