Aortic Valve Replacement
Aortic valve surgery at Trinity Health Michigan uses techniques such as thoracoscopy, endoscopy, robot-assisted surgery and percutaneous surgery.
What is aortic valve replacement and repair?
Blood flows in and out of your heart every time that it beats. The aorta, the heart's largest blood vessel, controls the blood flow out of your heart. It opens so that blood can flow out and then closes to keep the blood from returning to the heart. Aortic valve replacement or repair is needed when the aorta does not open or close properly.
- Aortic Regurgitation – This occurs when the aortic valve does not close properly, which causes blood to leak back into the heart.
- Aortic Stenosis – This occurs when the aortic valve does not open properly, reducing blood flow through the aorta.
