Mitral Valve Repair & Replacement

A woman and her grandmother stroll happily through a park

Expertly-trained surgeons at Trinity Health Michigan perform open-heart surgery for mitral valve repair and replacement. With an emphasis on quality care before, during and after your surgery, we're fully equipped to put you on the path toward a happier, more active life.

What is a Mitral Valve?

A healthy mitral valve controls the flow of blood between the upper and lower chambers of the left atrium and left ventricle. Normally, the mitral valve allows blood to flow in only one direction — from the atrium to the ventricle. Your mitral valve may need to be replaced or repaired when it either doesn't seal properly, allowing blood to flow in the wrong direction back through your atrium, or if it becomes too tight and constricts the blood flow.

Identifying your need for mitral valve repair or replacement begins with a diagnosis. Your primary care physician can refer you to a cardiologist who will be able to properly assess the condition of your heart.
