Coronary Artery Bypass
Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) is performed regularly at Trinity Health Michigan by heart surgeons who combine cardiovascular expertise with patient relationship-based care.
CABG can improve or completely alleviate chest pain and the threat of heart attack for as long as 10-15 years. Proper lifestyle changes, including exercise and diet, will also help contribute to your overall heart health.
What is Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting?
CABG is a surgery that helps increase blood flow to the heart in order to prevent heart attacks.
CABG is typically used to treat patients who suffer from coronary heart disease (CHD), which causes plaque buildup inside of the coronary arteries. Without treatment, the excess plaque can harden and/or rupture, causing a clot that prevents blood from flowing through the coronary artery to the heart. This is the most common cause of heart attacks, and CABG is the most common type of open-heart surgery.
During the procedure, a healthy artery or vein is grafted/connected to the blocked artery in order to create a new path for blood to flow to the heart.
