Muskegon Family Medicine Residency Program

Trinity Health Muskegon’s Family Medicine Residency Program is a 3 year program that will be accepting 5 residents per application cycle.

First Year

Recommended or Required Rotations

First year typically has the most inpatient rotations. Most rotations will be at Trinity Health Muskegon Hospital. Pediatric rotations are at Helen Devos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids (housing provided free of cost). First-year residents will have one full clinic day each week at the Fruitport Family Medicine Clinic, seeing 4-9 patients per day.

  • Fruitport Family Medicine Clinic/Orientation: first 4 weeks for all interns
  • Inpatient Internal Medicine Service: 8 weeks
  • Inpatient Family Medicine Call Service: 4 weeks
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU): 4 weeks
  • Surgery Selective: 4 weeks
  • Orthopedic Surgery: 4 weeks
  • Inpatient Obstetrics and Gynecology: 4 weeks
  • Emergency Medicine: 4 weeks
  • Inpatient Pediatric Hospitalist: 4 weeks
  • Outpatient Pediatrics: 4 weeks
  • Radiology: 2 weeks
  • Anesthesia: 2 weeks
  • Elective: 4 weeks

Second Year

Recommended or Required Rotations

Second-year schedules include more electives, so that residents may explore their interests well before beginning to apply for attending positions/fellowship opportunities. Second-year residents spend 2 clinic days per week at Fruitport Family Medicine Clinic, seeing 9-14 patients per day.

  • Inpatient Internal Medicine Service: 4 weeks
  • Inpatient Family Medicine Call Service: 8 weeks + 3 cross-coverage weekends
  • Emergency Medicine: 4 weeks
  • Geriatrics: 4 weeks
  • Inpatient/Outpatient OB/GYN: 4 weeks
  • Pediatric Emergency Medicine: 4 weeks
  • Inpatient Newborn Nursery: 4 weeks
  • Family Medicine Clinic: 4 weeks
  • OMM: 4 weeks
  • Elective: 12 weeks

Third Year

Recommended or Required Rotations

Third-year schedules allow the most freedom for residents to further explore their medical interests. This year is traditionally the most outpatient focused year, but can become more inpatient focused depending on the residents’ interests. Second-year residents spend 2 clinic days per week at Fruitport Family Medicine Clinic, seeing 9-14 patients per day.

  • Inpatient Family Medicine Call Service: 8 weeks + 3 cross-coverage weekends
  • Dermatology: 4 weeks
  • Family Medicine Clinic: 4 weeks
  • Ambulatory Gynecology: 4 weeks
  • Psychiatry: 4 weeks
  • Elective: 28 weeks
