I have been involved in international medical relief activities for many years. In my leisure time, I enjoy musical pursuits and pretend that I can golf, but mostly love to spend time with my wife, our 8 children and 6 grandkids.

Teaching has always been in integral part of my professional life. I've been involved with medical education in some fashion for over 30 years, serving on the faculty of 2 medical schools and as program director for 2 palliative medicine fellowship programs. In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I am a practicing palliative physician, and also serve on the Advisory Committee for Pain and Symptom Management to the governor of the state of Michigan.

West Michigan is a vibrant area for culture, education, environment and recreation, and as such has been a great place to live and raise a family. It has a sophisticated medical care system with excellent, state of the art health care resources. In all, it's a great place to live, practice, and play!

Why I chose this program/location for my training
I chose Grand Rapids because it is a great city for training and living. Furthermore, the physicians associated with the Family Medicine Residency expressed a desire to provide a strong education driven by compassion and high expectations.
Hobbies/what I do outside of work
I enjoy hiking, backpacking, travel, philosophy, hanging out with my dog, gardening and yoga.

I enjoy working as both an attending physician in Pediatric Pain & Palliative Medicine and Pediatric Hospitalist. I am particularly interested in resident and fellow education, the stress that caregivers of children with chronic medical problems face, and improvement of communication among healthcare professionals and families.
