Robert K. Cleary, MD

Robert K. Cleary, MD

Dr. Cleary, born in Royal Oak, Michigan, graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Science in 1979. He received his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1984, and completed his residency in General Surgery at Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital in 1989. A fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery followed at Parkland/Presbyterian Hospitals and was completed in 1992. Dr Cleary is the Program Director for the Colon and Rectal Surgery residency, Director of Research, Vice President of the Association for Program Directors in Colon and Rectal Surgery, Chair of the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative Enhanced Recovery Pathway Committee, member of the Alliance/American College of Surgeons Operative Standards for Cancer Surgery Committee, member of the Alliance/American College of Surgeons Cancer Care Delivery Research Committee ,and member of the ACGME Colon and Rectal Surgery Residency Review Committee. Dr. Cleary enjoys coaching and playing baseball, photography and spending time with his wife and six children.

Melissa I. Chang, MD

Melissa I. Chang, MD, is a double board-certified surgeon in general and colon and rectal surgery. She received her undergraduate and masters degrees from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, and completed her medical degree at Tufts University in Boston, MA. Dr. Chang completed her General Surgery residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, NY and her Colon and Rectal Surgery fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Dr. Chang has clinical interests in minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic approaches for colon and rectal cancer, benign diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, and pelvic floor disorders. Dr. Chang also specializes in the workup and treatment of fecal incontinence, diarrhea, and anorectal disease including abscesses, fistulas, and hemorrhoids.

John C. Eggenberger, MD

John C. Eggenberger, MD

Dr. Eggenberger was born in Detroit, Michigan and completed both his undergraduate (1981) and medical school (1985) studies at the University of Michigan. He then completed his General Surgery Residency at the University of Michigan in 1991 and his Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 1992. Dr. Eggenberger is board certified in both General and Colon and Rectal Surgery. His clinical interests include colon, rectal and anal cancers, lower endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, complex anorectal disease and re-operative colon and rectal surgery. He currently serves as the Walter M. Whitehouse Endowed Chair of Surgery for Trinity Health Ann Arbor and Livingston Hospital. He enjoys University of Michigan sports, golf, biking, walking, reading and spending time with family.

Amanda M. McClure, MD

Amanda M. McClure, MD

Dr. McClure is a board-certified general and colorectal surgeon. Dr. McClure specializes in robotic and laparoscopic surgery, as well as minimally invasive transanal procedures. She has clinical interests in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer. Dr. McClure specializes in treating diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease and anorectal disorders including hemorrhoids, fissures, abscesses and fistulas. She performs specialized testing and treatment for pelvic floor disorders, including constipation and fecal incontinence.

Beth-Ann Shanker, MD

Beth-Ann Shanker, MD

Dr. Beth-Ann Shanker graduated from Barnard College, Columbia University with honors in Biopsychology.  She received her MD, MSc from Rochester University School of Medicine and Dentistry.  She completed her general surgery residency at Rutgers University.  She went on to a three-year fellowship in minimally invasive surgery and colon and rectal surgery at the Colon and Rectal Clinic of Orlando.  Dr. Shanker has been part of the IHA Colon and Rectal surgical practice since 2016, and is currently the Associate Program Director of the Colon and Rectal Fellowship program.  She is both a member of the national AOA medical honors society and a recipient of the national Arnold P Gold humanism and teaching award.

 Dr. Shanker is double boarded in general and colorectal surgery.  Her areas of interest include robotic and laparoscopic techniques.  She treats all areas of colon and rectal disorders including malignancy, inflammatory bowel conditions, diseases of the anus and rectum, and pelvic floor disorders such as prolapse, fecal incontinence and constipation.

John Byrn, MD

John Byrn, MD

John C. Byrn, M.D is a Clinical Professor of Surgery in the Division of Colorectal Surgery. He graduated from Hope College with a B.A. in Chemistry and received his MD degree from the University of Illinois-Chicago College of Medicine. He trained in general surgery at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, NY. Dr. Byrn went on for his Colon and Rectal residency at the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH. Dr. Byrn was a Clinical Assistant and Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from 2009-2015 and served as the Chief of the Section of Colorectal Surgery from 2013-2105.

Calista Harbaugh, MD

Calista Harbaugh, MD

Calista Harbaugh, M.D. M.Sc. is a faculty member in the Division of Colorectal Surgery. Dr. Harbaugh graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S.E. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She went on to receive her medical degree from the University of Michigan School of Medicine with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. She then completed her internship and residency in General Surgery at the University of Michigan, including 2 years as a Clinician Scholar in the National Clinician Scholars Program at the University of Michigan where she earned her Master’s degree in Health and Healthcare Research. She completed the Colon & Rectal Surgery Fellowship at the University of Minnesota, and returned to the University of Michigan as an Assistant Professor of Surgery.

Clinical Specialization
Dr. Harbaugh’s clinical practice includes the evaluation and management of benign and neoplastic diseases of the small bowel, colon, rectum, and anus. She has a particular interest in the use of laparoscopic and robotic techniques for the management of colorectal cancer, diverticular disease and inflammatory bowel disease.

Gifty Kwakye, MD

Gifty Kwakye, MD, MPH

Dr. Gifty Kwakye, MD, MPH, is the Arthur W. Fleming, M.D. Research Professor and a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Colorectal Surgery. She graduated from Yale University with a BSc degree in both Biology and Psychology. She received her medical degree from Yale University in 2010 and holds a Master’s in Public Health from Johns Hopkins. She completed her general surgery residency at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School in 2017 and colorectal surgery fellowship at the University of Minnesota in 2018. Dr Kwakye joined the faculty at the University of Michigan in 2018.

She received multiple awards including the Robert T. Osteen and the Partners Health System Medical Education awards for excellence in teaching. Her passion for global health was also recognized with a Global Health Scholarship award from Johns Hopkins during her public health training.

Clinical Specialization
Dr. Kwakye’s clinical expertise is in the treatment of colon and rectal oncology, inflammatory bowel disease, anorectal disorders and utilizing minimally invasive approaches to colorectal disease. Her particular interests are in the management of pelvic floor disorders including rectal prolapse and fecal incontinence

Michael McGee, MD

Michael McGee, MD

Dr. Michael McGee is Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Colorectal Surgery at the University of Michigan. Prior to obtaining his medical degree at Drexel University, he was trained as a mechanical engineer. After completing general surgery training at Case Western Reserve University, Dr. McGee completed colorectal surgery fellowship at Cleveland Clinic. While at Case Western, Dr. McGee completed the Dudley P. Allen Scholarship dedicated to clinical research in minimally invasive surgery and surgical endoscopy. Dr. McGee was recruited to Northwestern University where he practiced for 11 years and held several system-wide administrative roles for Northwestern Medicine before joining the University of Michigan in 2022.

Dr. McGee’s clinical interests include complex re-operative abdominal surgery, minimally invasive colorectal surgery, surgical endoscopy, and anorectal surgery for cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. He served as co-director of the 50+ hospital Illinois Surgical Quality Improvement Collaborative (ISQIC) where he led day-to-day operations and statewide quality improvement projects for thousands of surgical patients in Illinois. Dr. McGee’s research interests include surgical quality improvement, implementation science, and patient education. He is an active member of several national surgical organizations, multiple editorial boards, and has authored over fifty publications and received multiple grants and awards for research, teaching, and humanism.

Scott Regenbogen, MD

Scott Regenbogen, MD

Scott Regenbogen, MD, MPH is a Professor of Surgery and Division Chief of Colorectal Surgery. He graduated from Princeton University with an A.B. in psychology, and received his M.D. degree from the University of California, San Francisco. He completed General Surgery residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital, including three years as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Health Services Research, and was awarded a Master’s in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health. He then completed fellowship training in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Lahey Clinic, and joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 2011.
