Robotic Surgery Program

We were early adopters of the robotic approach to colorectal surgery in 2009 and our program includes 4 robotic colon and rectal surgeons – Amanda McClure MD, Beth-Ann Shanker MD, Melissa Chang MD, and Robert K Cleary MD. John C Byrn MD, Michael McGee MD, and Scott Regenbogen MD also use the robotic approach at the University of Michigan. Robert K Cleary MD helped Amir L Bastawrous MD (Swedish Seattle) develop and implement the annual Association for Program Directors of Colon and Rectal Surgery-sponsored National Colorectal Surgery Fellowship Training Program in 2011. Amanda McClure MD is the multidisciplinary Robotics Committee Chair and her efforts led to the THAA designation of Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation. We are also a Case Observation Center for new robotic surgeons. Our group has published several studies related to the robotic approach, intracorporeal anastomosis, and natural orifice extraction, and our faculty and fellows present at ASCRS. Several graduates of our program have started robotics programs in the university setting.
