Didactics
Weekly didactics are shared with the Henry Ford Health (HFH) and Detroit Medical Center-Wayne State University (DMC-WSU) Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship programs. Fellows are excused from all rotations and clinics to attend in person. Core HPM topics are emphasized in July and August to provide a strong fundamental knowledge base. This is expanded upon in subsequent months as the program draws from the wealth of expertise within our own faculty, Henry Ford Health, Detroit Medical Center, Trinity Health, and the greater Metro-Detroit region to provide an exemplary learning experience. Fellows directly participate in the didactics curriculum by creating and presenting several talks including a journal club, complex case presentation, mortality and morbidity conference and a HPM topic presentation.
Included in our didactics program is a quarterly HPM advanced topic lecture series which is designed from the collaborative effort of our program and the DMC, Trinity Health – Ann Arbor, and Michigan Medicine HPM fellowship programs.
Research
The program offers and encourages the fellow to participate in at least one research project. The fellow is expected to present their project, at minimum, at the Trinity Health Ann Arbor Annual Research Forum held each spring. The Internal Medicine Research Director is available to offer technical and practical advice in the design process of a research project.
Conferences
The fellow is encouraged to attend the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) annual conference. We provide funding for travel and registration separate from yearly educational stipends. In addition, there may be other local-area conferences that the fellow may attend depending on availability.
