David G. Heidt, MD

Thank you for your interest in the surgical residency program at Trinity Health Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It is truly an honor to serve as the residency director alongside our outstanding surgical residents and faculty. The general surgery residency began in 1948 under the direction of E. Thurston Thieme, MD. The surgical heritage in our department is quite rich. Outstanding clinical care and pioneering research in minimally invasive surgery, hyperalimentation, vascular surgery and alimentary tract surgery characterize the past. Currently elegant outcomes research in colorectal surgery, surgical critical care, vascular surgery, and minimally invasive and robotic surgery continues in conjunction with the delivery of outstanding tertiary clinical care.

We are blessed with excellent facilities, including a sophisticated simulation environment. A broad range of surgical problems are managed by our residents and faculty surgeons culminating in an excellent comprehensive surgical training experience. Our graduates are comfortable pursuing practice opportunities upon completion of the residency, although about half have pursued fellowship training over the past 20 years. Our residents have matched into competitive fellowship programs in plastic surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, trauma and critical care, minimally invasive surgery, breast surgery, colorectal surgery, and pediatric surgery. Ultimately, whether your goal is rural or international surgery or a research oriented academic career, your professional growth and development, along with your personal happiness and satisfaction with your career remaining our highest priorities.

Our medical campus is located immediately adjacent to Ann Arbor, perhaps the quintessential college town, widely considered one of the finest places to live in the Midwest. We look forward to your visit, and thank you for your interest in our general surgery residency program.
