Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy is an advanced imaging test that uses “live” X-rays to capture video-like images of the inside of your body. This tool helps providers see how your digestive, reproductive, respiratory, skeletal or urinary systems are working.

Our expert providers perform fluoroscopy to diagnose health conditions or guide medical procedures. You receive care from a team that has extensive training in this specialized imaging procedure. And we focus on your comfort from start to finish.

Types of Fluoroscopy Tests We Provide

We’re home to a team of physicians, nurses and technologists specializing in advanced imaging tests. Our experienced team performs:

  • Angiogram: This specialized test can highlight blockages in your heart’s arteries (blood vessels). Our specialists perform an angiogram to guide your treatment. We may also remove the blockage during your test, depending on your needs.
  • Barium enema: Also called a lower GI X-ray, this test can diagnose conditions in your intestines, including polyps (growths), colon cancer or ulcerative colitis. We may also use this test to find the cause of bowel problems like chronic diarrhea.
  • Barium swallow test: Our swallowing experts use fluoroscopy to see how your swallowing muscles are working. We also use barium swallow to detect problems in your esophagus (tube that connects your throat to your stomach).
  • Catheter procedures: Our interventional radiologists may use fluoroscopy during catheterization procedures. We use the live images to guide a catheter (thin tube) through your blood vessels, urinary tract or liver bile ducts.
  • Hysterosalpingogram (HSG): Our obstetricians and gynecologists use HSG to check for blockages or abnormalities in the uterus and fallopian tubes.
  • Orthopedic surgery: Our team uses fluoroscopy during joint replacement surgery and to treat fractures (broken bones).
  • Pacemaker placement: Fluoroscopy helps our team place a pacemaker in your heart to treat arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms).
  • Stent placement: We use fluoroscopy imaging to guide stents (small, hollow tubes) into blocked blood vessels.

How to Prepare for Your Fluoroscopy Procedure

You will receive a call before your fluoroscopy appointment to discuss with you how to prepare. We customize your instructions to your medical needs and the type of procedure you’re having. In general, you should plan to:

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Leave jewelry, hair accessories and any other metal objects at home.
  • Find child care if necessary. For their safety, children cannot be in the room during your fluoroscopy. Our staff cannot supervise children during your appointment.

When you check in, we may ask you to change into a gown or hospital scrub pants.

In some cases, you may receive a contrast agent, a substance that highlights certain parts of your body during the test. Contrast agents come in several forms:

  • Enema that you place in your rectum
  • Liquid you swallow
  • Intravenous (IV) line in your arm

Getting Your Results

If you have a fluoroscopy diagnostic test, our board-certified radiologists, PA's or NP's read and interpret your images. Then, they send a detailed report to your referring provider, usually within one to two days. Contact your referring provider if you haven’t received your results within five days.

If you have fluoroscopy as part of a medical procedure, our providers talk with you about the outcome before you go home.
