Nonsurgical Orthopedic Treatments at Trinity Health Michigan: Why Choose Us?
Our highly skilled team delivers therapies, medications and in-office procedures that help you avoid surgery. Even if previous treatments were not successful, we can help you.
Our orthopedic experts take the time to understand your medical needs and care preferences. We then consider a broad range of nonsurgical options before selecting the ones that best meet your needs.
Nonsurgical Orthopedic Treatments
Nonsurgical therapies we offer include:
Electrical Stimulation
This treatment relieves pain, muscle weakness and inflammation with the help of a gentle electrical current. Electrical stimulation improves circulation, blocks pain signals, relieves muscle spasms and more.
We deliver electrical stimulation using a machine that has insulated wires. At the end of the wire, an adhesive patch (electrode) sticks to your skin. We apply electrodes near the injured area and then activate the machine. You may feel a light tingling sensation, but it should not be uncomfortable.
Injections
Injections deliver medication and other substances directly to the affected area. This can help relieve pain sooner. You may benefit from an injection if taking oral medication fails to relieve your symptoms.
Many people feel better after injections of steroids and substances that lubricate achy joints. It may take more than one injection to achieve long-term relief.
Medications
Over-the-counter and prescription medications can relieve symptoms and help you get more out of other treatments.
Medications we use to treat orthopedic issues and sports injuries include:
- Antidepressants lessen the effects of ongoing pain even if you do not have depression.
- Antiseizure drugs relieve pain associated with nerve injuries.
- Muscle relaxants quiet sharp pain and muscle spasms in the early stages of recovery.
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, relieve pain and reduce inflammation.
- Osteoporosis drugs slow bone loss.
Nutrition
Getting proper nutrition accelerates your body’s natural healing abilities. And it’s especially important when recovering from orthopedic surgery.
We review your health goals and provide personalized recommendations for optimizing your nutrition. You may be able to get the nutrients you need by consuming more protein or foods with certain vitamins. In some cases, an oral supplement is necessary.
Orthopedic Rehabilitation
Orthopedic rehabilitation is for patients who need help recovering from a procedure or severe injury. Services are available on an inpatient or outpatient basis. Care may include physical and occupational therapy. Our team works together to help you safely get moving or cope with changes to your abilities. Find out more about orthopedic rehabilitation.
Pain Management
Pain management may be right for you if initial treatments are not successful. Our team includes pain management specialists who use a variety of techniques to help you get relief. Some options are better for nerve injuries, while others work on muscles and other soft tissue.
Pain management therapies we offer include:
- Electrostimulation, treating pain with a gentle electrical current
- Injections, using a needle to deliver pain medications and other substances to affected areas
- Nerve blocks, injecting substances into nerve tissue to block pain signals
- Spinal manipulation, applying a quick thrust of pressure to guide spine joints back toward their natural position
Physical Therapy
Certified physical therapists guide you through a personalized program focused on your recovery goals. We recommend specific exercises that help you build strength and flexibility. Care also includes helping you safely transition back to daily activities and lowering the risk of re-injury. Get more information about physical therapy.
