Welcome to the Trinity Health Oakland General Surgery Residency Program Website. The General Surgery Residency Program at Trinity Health Oakland first received Residency Review Committee approval in 1953. Since that time, the program has offered a fully accredited 5-year program that is designed to exceed the ACGME/RRC for Surgery requirements and prepare graduates for the American Board of Surgery examination. Our program includes 10 categorical and 4 preliminary positions.

The residency program is based at Trinity Health Oakland, a 497-bed comprehensive community hospital and an American College of Surgeons certified Level II Trauma Center. Of the 60 months of training, 58 are completed at Trinity Health Oakland with two one-month outside rotations for transplant and pediatric surgery done locally in metro-Detroit. We look forward to meeting candidates from across the country that are interested in an excellent postgraduate training program in general surgery.

Program Mission Statement

The Trinity Health Oakland General Surgery Residency program strives to create an outstanding community hospital learning environment to train residents to deliver compassionate, high quality patient care. The program will encourage and guide resident physicians to achieve academic and clinical excellence. Our program will provide a patient-centered, evidence-based medicine and broad operative experience within a diverse community hospital setting in order to help our residents achieve their maximal potential personally and professionally.

We serve a diverse patient population in the city of Pontiac, Michigan a community in Oakland County. Our patients represent a broad range of ethnicities, racial groups, religious affiliations, socioeconomic strata, and include insured and uninsured populations.

Program Aims

The Trinity Health Oakland General Surgery program aims to graduate residents who are capable of achieving board certification and entering into the practice of their choice. The goals and objectives of the program are to develop accomplished technically expert and clinically sound general surgeons who fully meet and exceed the standards of knowledge and excellence established by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the American Board of Surgery, and the American College of Surgeons.

This program is dedicated to graduating true general surgeons that can provide care in communities across the country. The hospital and the medical staff are dedicated and fully committed to the maintenance and support of a superior training program. The institution and faculty take pride in maintaining an academic training program in a diverse community setting and promoting life-long learning.
