Curriculum
Neurology Residency
Our 4-year categorical neurology program includes the first year of post-graduate training primarily at Trinity Health Grand Rapids Hospital. During training, residents will have clinical opportunities at Trinity Health Grand Rapids Hauenstein Center, as well as Trinity Health Muskegon, Trinity Health Grand Haven, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, University of Michigan Health-West, and Corewell Health facilities.
Program Focus
Neurology is a 4-year categorical program. All blocks are 4 weeks in length, totaling 13 per academic year. We offer a designated 2 week "neurology boot camp" during the PGY-1 year in which all members of the class are brought together to focus on an intensive review of neuroanatomy, as well as faculty-led sessions on neurological emergencies, neurological examination techniques and principles of neuro-localization. This includes Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS) training and certification before the start of the PGY-2 year.
Our senior-led residency service shares call responsibilities through a structured night float system. This eliminates any 24-hour call shifts.
Residents will participate in Continuity Clinics one half-day per week in their PGY-2 through PGY-4 years. Through our outpatient continuity clinic experience, our residents build the skills necessary to independently practice outpatient general neurology. Our residents are trained on a variety of procedures, such as Botox, nerve blocks and lumbar punctures.

Conferences and Didactics
Based on our strong commitment to educational excellence, the following opportunities will be offered during your training. There will be 4 hours of dedicated, protected teaching time each week to facilitate learning and to organize didactic "modules" with a common theme being covered on a 1.5 year-rotating curriculum.
Led by our curriculum director, Dr. Aileen Antonio, we strive for our didactic curriculum to be well organized and thorough, encompassing all areas of neurological care. With our unique Humanism and Resiliency curriculum, we thrive on having an interactive and diverse curriculum, with a plethora of simulations, resident involvement in teaching and didactics on other aspects of healthcare, including Advocacy, Wellness, Equity/Diversity/Inclusion, Ethics, Finance, Leadership and more.

Research
In accordance with ACGME guidelines, all residents beginning in their PGY-2 year will have the opportunity to participate in a three-year integrative scholarly research program to become familiar with the methods and ethical considerations involved in conducting scientific research. This program will educate the resident in being a better consumer of medical research through didactic and experiential learning. Neurology residents will be mentored by our faculty members.
Our department offers resources including a research coordinator, biostatistics consultant, on-site Institutional Review Board, audio/visual and poster preparation expertise, and a clinical trials unit (CTU). Our residents receive support to present research projects at local, regional, national, and international meetings.
