Schedule
Fellows can expect to be involved in hands-on teaching of our Internal Medicine rotating residents during the inpatient consult months. We want fellows to take on leadership responsibilities of the inpatient service as they become familiar with the hospital system in effect “running” the service in conjunction with the attending physician. An oncology trained APP is also assigned to the inpatient team further expanding the team’s capability of caring for multiple patients at any one time.
Fellow continuity clinic is reserved every Wednesday afternoon for 1st year fellows and Thursday afternoons for 2nd and 3rd year fellows regardless of the rotation beginning July of the first year and continuing through the end of the third year. The fellow will keep their patients the entire three-year period to gain a longitudinal teaching experience.
Fellows receive 4 weeks of vacation time per academic year to be taken in 1-week increments per the GME policy.

Rotation Descriptions
Oncology Consult Service - Our inpatient month is comprised of caring for the oncology patients (both solid and malignant hematological conditions) admitted for inpatient chemotherapy regimens and seeing the new consults throughout the hospital. It is a busy month generally. The oncology team includes the fellow, attending, resident rotator, physician assistant, and oncology pharmacist. Fellows see patients Monday - Saturday with Sunday off and have at-home night call responsibilities (attending back up). Fellows can derive patients for their respective continuity clinics from the various consults seen.
Hematology Consult Service- This month is intended to expose fellows to seeing inpatients with classical hematological conditions (“benign hematology”). A fellow, attending, and pharmacist with occasional rotating resident will run this service. Anticoagulation stewardship and blood bank resourcing will be a major component of this rotation.
Palliative Care - This month is led by the Palliative Care group and our fellows are integrated into both the outpatient and inpatient team alongside the Palliative Care fellow. Goals of care discussions and pain management are the focus of this rotation.
Multidisciplinary Clinic Month - This month is entirely outpatient and places the fellow in the various outpatient MDCs including Breast, Head and Neck, Lung, and GI. Additionally, fellows are rotated through the Gynecologic Oncology clinic, Radiation Oncology clinic, and Genetic Counseling clinic. Fellows may also obtain patients for their continuity clinics from the various MDCs.
Research - The research month is used to further ongoing research activities utilizing the resources from the Graduate Medical Education Department and if needed other outside sources. It is expected that all fellows will contribute to original research projects. Dr. Carolyn Carrera, M.D. and Dr. Tareq Al-Baghdadi, MD are our research coordinators who will work with the Program Director and Associate Program Director in this regard.
Bone Marrow Transplant - Our fellows gain experience rotating at the Karmanos Cancer Institute located approximately 30 mins drive from SJMH in downtown Detroit. KCI is considered one of the most well respected and longest running bone marrow and stem cell transplantation programs in the country. Fellows will see inpatients and outpatients during this experience. Dr. Joseph Uberti, M.D. Ph.D. is the preceptor for this month.
Neuro Oncology - Our fellows will be integrated into the Neuro-Oncology fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital also located in Detroit for this one-month rotation in the third year. The Hermelin Brain Tumor Center is a high-volume center with access to many clinical trials for brain tumor patients. Dr. Tobias Walbert M.D, PhD is the preceptor for this month.
Elective - An elective month may be utilized for extra MDC, inpatient consult month, or outpatient experience depending on fellow interest or consist of an away rotation at another institution to gain further immersive experience in a particular discipline of interest within oncology/hematology.
