Our program has daily didactic/learning opportunities with reserved and protected meeting times for optimum participation. These include a newly established fellow morning report (2023) on Monday mornings, remote Tuesday mornings at the University of Michigan (fellow and faculty), fellow noon conference on Wednesday in the lower level conference room (remote access for UM fellows and faculty), Thursday remote hematology specific conferences through the Hematology Education Online Series through the University of Miami and rotating Friday sessions including: heme path conference (with attending hematopathologist and multi headed microscope), fellow journal club,  board review, or M&M. In addition, we are utilizing available technology to disseminate information with virtual journal club articles (found here), as well as discussions and assignments through the ASCO/ASH programs specifically designed for fellows. Our fellowship program covers membership fees and access to the ASCO Education Essentials for Oncology Fellows and the ASH Fundamentals for Hematology Fellows programs, as well as educational opportunities/programs through the Michigan Society of Hematology and Oncology (MSHO) which include the MSHO Annual Meeting, Fellow Board Review, MSHO Fellow Jeopardy, Annual Reviews in Hematology and Oncology, and MSHO Precision Medicine Symposium.

Additionally, fellows will have access to the Simulation Center to review bone marrow biopsy technique and lumbar puncture/intrathecal chemotherapy administration with a supervising faculty member. Beyond what is already covered by the program, fellows also have a yearly stipend available to purchase materials meant to further supplement their educational or wellness needs (for board review as an example).

Tumor Board

The multidisciplinary tumor boards are held on the same day as the relevant MDC clinic. Fellows are encouraged to attend any and all tumor boards regardless if they are seeing patients in that clinic that day as part of their MDC month. These tumor boards are held in the Cancer Center lower level room which allows for multimedia presentation of images and pathology slides. These meetings are attended by the surgical subspecialty, medical subspecialty, pathology, radiation oncology, radiology, research team, social work, specialty specific ancillary staff, and nurse navigator.

Pathology Slide Review

Twice monthly a hematopathology slide review is held in the Pathology Department. This is a fellow-led conference focusing on both the morphology of hematologic disease but also includes laboratory-based discussions relevant to diagnosis (cytogenetics, molecular studies, flow cytometry and immunohistochemical studies).

Conferences

Each year fellows are encouraged to attend either the American Society of Hematology (ASH) Annual Meeting or The American Society of Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting. We are able to provide funding for travel and registration separate from yearly educational stipends. In addition, there are other conferences through the Michigan Society of Hematology and Oncology and the MCRC/NCORP that fellows may attend as well.
