What is Home Infusion Therapy?

Home infusion therapy is a medical treatment that allows patients to receive necessary infusions, such as antibiotics, chemotherapy, immunoglobulins or pain management therapies, in the comfort of their own home. This type of therapy is administered via intravenous (IV) or subcutaneous methods and is typically used for patients who require ongoing treatments but prefer the convenience of receiving care at home instead of in a hospital or clinic.

Why Choose Home Infusion Therapy?

  • Convenience and Comfort: Home infusion eliminates the need for frequent trips to a medical facility, allowing patients to receive treatment at their convenience in a familiar environment.
  • Improved Quality of Life: By receiving treatment at home, patients can maintain a sense of normalcy in their daily activities, reducing stress and minimizing disruption to their routines.
  • Personalized Care: With the support of trained home care nurses and expert pharmacists, patients receive individualized attention and care tailored to their specific medical needs.

Patient Requirements for Home Infusion Therapy

To ensure a safe and effective treatment experience, patients must meet certain qualifications for home infusion therapy. These qualifications include:

1. Clinical Requirements

  • Insurance Coverage or Private Pay Agreement: Insurance must cover home infusion therapy, or the patient must have a private pay agreement in place.
  • Therapy Suitability: The therapy must be one that can be safely administered at home.
  • Patient or Caregiver Ability:
    • Physical Requirements: Patients or caregivers should have the necessary mobility and dexterity (e.g., the ability to reach the refrigerator or hang an IV bag).
    • Mental Requirements: Patients must be teachable and able to understand the dosing intervals, drip rates and safety precautions.

2. Environmental Requirements

  • Clean Environment: The home environment must be clean with minimal infection risk.
  • Refrigeration: If required, refrigeration for medications must be available.
  • Safety: The home should be safe for the patient, caregivers, couriers and home care nurses.

What to Expect During a Home Infusion

Our home infusion therapy process is designed to make the experience as comfortable as possible for patients and caregivers. Here’s what to expect:

  • Initial Training: A home care nurse will visit your home to teach the patient and caregiver how to infuse the medication properly.
  • Ongoing Care: A home care nurse will make weekly visits to change IV dressings and collect labs when necessary.
  • Daily Infusions: Patients and caregivers will be responsible for administering the daily infusions.
  • Pharmacist Expertise:
    • Initial counseling and therapy monitoring
    • Frequent phone calls to monitor side effects, therapy effectiveness and ensure the delivery of supplies
    • On-call pharmacists available for urgent needs after business hours
  • Therapy monitoring includes lab review, medication dosing and communication with your health care providers.
  • Courier Deliveries: Medications and supplies will be delivered directly to the patient's home by our couriers or via FedEx in some cases.
