Access to electronic health records (EHR) for research purposes is allowed after determinations and approvals are in place. Those approvals include, but may not be limited to:
- Human Resource approval
- System access is required to use EHR for research purposes
- HIPAA Privacy Officer approval
- The HIPAA Privacy Officer will determine the need for a Data Use Agreement (DUA) or Business Associate Agreement (BAA) based on the nature of the research, the patient population of interest and use of the data for analysis and publication
- Other as determined by the Office of Research & Innovation
- Assistance is available to determine when Agreements or Contracts are necessary between universities, private practice or other community agencies
- Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval
The Office of Research & Innovation will facilitate obtaining access to the EHR and help to determine whether or not the data required to answer a research question is available from the EHR. For further assistance, please submit a consultation request.
