LIVONIA, Mich. (Feb. 27, 2018) — St. Mary Mercy Livonia announced that Matthew J. Griffin, MD, MBA, has joined the hospital as its new Chief Medical Officer. In his new role, Dr. Griffin oversees administration for medical staff, graduate medical education, patient safety, clinical quality, accreditation, care management and other services.
"Dr. Griffin's knowledge and physician leadership experience will be a significant asset to our medical staff and to the hospital," said Dave Spivey, president and CEO of St. Mary Mercy Livonia. "Under his leadership, we will continue to elevate quality and patient safety standards across the hospital and evolve to meet the future medical needs of the communities we serve."
Dr. Griffin is a practicing emergency medicine physician, clinical educator and Navy veteran. Previously, he held the role of program director for the Emergency Medicine Residency Programs at Detroit Medical Center (DMC), a position he held for more than 10 years. His 27-year health care career includes serving as the vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer for Huron Valley Sinai Hospital (2013-2015) and Sinai-Grace Hospital (2009-2013), as well as various leadership roles in the Wayne State University Department of Emergency Medicine, and with Medical Center Emergency Services (MCES), the Emergency Medicine practice group serving all DMC hospitals.
Dr. Griffin earned his bachelor's degree in Physiology from Michigan State University and his medical degree (MD) from Wayne State University School of Medicine. From 1991-1995, Dr. Griffin served as a resident physician and then general medical officer in the United States Navy Medical Corps at Navy Hospital, San Diego; with the Marine Corps on Okinawa, Japan; and finally, back stateside at the Branch Medical Clinic in Winter Harbor, Maine. He then completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at Detroit Receiving Hospital in 1998, and in 2011 completed a Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville’s Physician Executive MBA Program.
Dr. Griffin resides with his family in Livonia. His wife Inger has worked as a Pediatric Nurse, presently works as a Case Manager, and runs the Emily Ann Griffin Foundation, a 501(c) 3 non-profit foundation dedicated to providing support to families with special needs children (eagf.org).
