Halloween costumes help NICU families celebrate a childhood milestone

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (October 27, 2023) – Halloween has arrived at Trinity Health Grand Rapids. The hospital’s tiniest patients, those in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), dressed up in hand-made costumes to celebrate the season.

“Having a baby or babies in the NICU is difficult enough for families, and it becomes something more when holidays and special events are spent in the hospital instead of at home,” said Kirstie Dixon, clinical services manager, Trinity Health Grand Rapids NICU. “The NICU team puts their outstanding creativity into action to make NICU-sized costumes for each baby so these tiniest of patients and their families can ‘trick-or-treat,’ too.”

Though the babies were not able to actually go outside to trick-or-treat, dressing up in the costumes allowed families to experience a childhood milestone. The costumes were all hand-made by NICU staff to fit these tiny patients without disrupting their care and monitoring. Families were gifted the costumes and provided with a printed photo to commemorate the day.

Trinity Health Grand Rapids NICU is a licensed 15-bed, Levell III NICU, that cares for 200 to 300 newborns on the unit every year. We have successfully cared for babies born at 23 weeks gestation and weighing as little as 11 ounces. To learn more about our NICU services, visit our website.
