Sticking to a regular routine before bedtime helps to provide cues to our body that it's time to relax and get ready to sleep.

Are you tired of tossing and turning at night, unable to get the quality sleep your body craves? Sleep Medicine Specialist Dr. Christopher Morgan shares six tips to help you improve your sleep to get a better night’s rest.

1. Stay on a Regular Schedule.

Our bodies have natural rhythms, and by sticking to a regular routine, we provide cues to our system about when it's time to sleep. This simple adjustment can lead to improved sleep quality.

2. Get Enough Sleep.

Dr. Morgan urges everyone to prioritize getting 7-8 hours of sleep each night. The cumulative effects of sleep deprivation can take a toll on your health and well-being.

3. Avoid Electronics in Bed.

It’s easy to get caught up scrolling on your phone at night. However, electronics emit blue light which can suppress the production of the sleep hormone melatonin.

4. Treat Sleep Apnea.

Approximately a quarter of the population suffers from sleep apnea, a condition that disrupts sleep and poses health risks. There are recent advancements in treatments, such as improved CPAP devices and innovative surgical options like the Inspire Therapy.

5. Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol in the Evening

What you consume in the evening matters. Both caffeine and alcohol can significantly impact sleep quality and increase nighttime disruptions.

6. Regular Exercise

Engaging in regular exercise has been proven to enhance both the quality and duration of sleep. Whether it's a brisk walk, a workout at the gym, or yoga, find an activity that suits your lifestyle.

If you find yourself struggling with sleep-related issues, don't hesitate to ask your primary care provider for a sleep study referral. A good night's sleep is within reach – start implementing these tips tonight for a healthier tomorrow.
