CANTON, Mich. (May 20, 2019) — St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and St. Mary Mercy Livonia, members of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, have appointed new chief nursing officers (CNO) at each of their respective hospitals. Katy Hoffman, from St. Joe's Ann Arbor, and Nick Nickolopoulos, from St. Mary Mercy, will oversee quality and standards of patient care, performance improvement, program management operations, nursing budget and resource allocation.

"Over the years, Katy and Nick have demonstrated an ability to develop strong, mutually supportive relationships among their fellow nurse leaders, and both have worked collaboratively with physician leaders, clinical and ancillary leaders and administrative leaders," said Joyce Young, PhD, RN, chief nursing officer of Trinity Health Michigan Region. "These two demonstrate the very best in the nursing profession. They are caring, compassionate and committed to providing excellent care to our patients."

Hoffman began her career at St. Joe's Ann Arbor 20 years ago as a staff nurse for the Medicine Progressive Care Unit, which treats pulmonary disease, renal disease, diabetes and chemical dependency. Since then, she has held numerous leadership positions at St. Joe's Ann Arbor and Livingston. She most recently served as executive director of nursing operations, providing strategic and operational leadership for the entire nursing department.

Hoffman earned her bachelor of science in nursing from Western Michigan University and her master's in nursing administration from Madonna University, graduating summa cum laude.

Prior to his appointment as CNO, Nickolopoulos served as the director of eight medical units at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland, where he managed more than 500 colleagues and had 100 direct reports.

Following a four-year tour of service as a U.S. Army medic, Nickolopoulos joined St. Joe's Oakland in 1995 as an emergency room team assistant. He became a nurse assistant in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Critical Care pool, and advanced to manager of the ICU. He earned his bachelor's degree in Nursing at Oakland University and a master of business administration degree in Healthcare Management from Western Governor's University.
