Clinical Training Sites
Trinity Health Oakland Hospital (Pontiac, MI)
Trinity Health Oakland is a 497-bed community teaching hospital, level II trauma center and longtime leader in health care in Oakland County. Trinity Health Oakland provides comprehensive care including cardiovascular, stroke, orthopedics, obstetrics, gynecology and cancer care. The hospital campus features a surgical pavilion, south patient tower with 204 private rooms and recently renovated mother baby unit. Residents complete the majority of their training at this hospital.
Trinity Health Livonia Hospital (Livonia, MI)
Trinity Health Livonia is a 304-bed community hospital with six residency programs, a 24-hour emergency department, and a Level II Trauma Center. Senior residents complete a Geriatrics rotation through this hospital.

Internal Medicine Program Resources
We have a dedicated group of core faculty; residents rounds with private hospitalists and teaching faculty during Internal Medicine Floors, learning efficient practice and the business of inpatient medicine, as well as dedicated teaching and creation of an environment of scientific inquiry.
We have a state of the art ICU, with daily rounds with Critical Care faculty. Our subspecialty rotations have dedicated inpatient consult rounds and ambulatory experience. We provide an opportunity to experience several electives. We do not have in-house call, and have a night float system and shift system in ICU. One of our Floor months emulates real-life Hospitalists' work.
We conduct several quality improvement and patient safety projects, assist with data analysis based research and publication and have an efficient in-house Institutional Review Board. Our state-of-the-art Simulation (SIM) Center opened in October 2016 and is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Accredited Education Institutes. The SIM Center occupies 7,600 square feet of dedicated space in the lower level of the South Tower of the hospital. Our program utilizes the SIM center to train residents in procedures, codes, point of care ultrasound and communication. Residents have the option of doing research with Wayne State faculty.
Trinity Health Oakland is a Level II trauma center with an outstanding Interventional Cardiology program, acute stroke thrombectomy certification, and excellent subspecialty and surgical support.
Didactics Program
Conferences, ABIM review Course and Medical Education Website
Residents have regularly scheduled conferences. Case discussion is an interactive session that focuses on diagnosis and medical management decisions. Noon conferences include case-based discussions of various internal medicine disorders, and other topics such as hospital safety, data, billing and coding, documentation, standard protocols and practices related to regulatory requirements, and availability of various webinars through Southeast Michigan Center for Medical Education. Other conferences include Grand Rounds, Journal Club, Morbidity and Mortality Report, weekly ABIM certification examination review course, and Ethics Grand Rounds. Faculty assist residents in preparation for their presentations and mentor them in the use of PowerPoint and presentation skills. We are a community hospital with a curriculum that focuses on patient-based care, with diversity and disparities training, Quality, Reliability, and Safety training, and in-house dedicated ABIM examination preparatory course.
We have our own medical education website with monthly exams, flash cards, Rapid response scenarios, online test discussions, and videos of ABIM review, noon conferences and case discussion conferences posted for review and attendance. We offer a Point of Care ultrasound curriculum. We are a proud center for education and our Program Director delivers the highly ranked yearly regional 6-day ABIM examination preparatory course in partnership with South East Michigan Center for Medical Education. We achieved 94% ABIM examination pass rate for the past 3 years.
We have a diverse cohort of residents and resident wellness is a priority, with dedicated wellness faculty in our program and a variety of system-level wellness resources.

Elective choices: Allergy/Immunology, Dermatology, Otorhinolaryngology, Office Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Office Orthopedics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Psychiatry, Primary care, Radiology, Clinical Research, Basic Science Research.
Electives are assigned as one or two week blocks.
Continuity clinic is assigned as one or two-week blocks (of 10 half day clinics/week) + one day per month except night float and Senior ICU. Vacations are assigned as one, two, three, or four week blocks per resident preference.
Research Opportunities
Our residents have access to excellent research support through our Trinity Health Oakland Research Department. Trinity Health Oakland has a very active Institutional Review Board and IRB/Research Director, medical staff and a research statistician to assist with all research processes and projects. Regular classes in IRB submission, critical thinking and manuscript preparation are available for residents, students, and faculty at Trinity Health Oakland. our residents routinely publish in peer reviewed medical journals and present award winning projects at local, regional and national conferences.
