Subspecialty
Hospitalist
Current Activities, Research or Professional Interests
Teaching and supervising medical residents and medical students is my primary passion in my role as a hospitalist. I rediscovered this passion after stepping away from my ten year long position as the medical director of our hospitalist group where I also served as chief of medicine and chairman of our clinical quality improvement committee. I believe these experiences enhanced my ability to be a more well rounded teacher and physician.
Why I chose to practice at Mercy Health/Grand Rapids...
Practicing medicine in the Grand Rapids area and more specifically Mercy Health Saint Mary's has been a true blessing. I respect the balance I have witnessed at this institution between excellent clinical care and a truly compassionate level of care. I also enjoy the collegiality I experience with both the nursing staff and the consultant physicians.

I have overseen the development of the Family Medicine Service (our inpatient service) and currently serve on various administrative committees. I also co-manage the practice management curriculum with Dr. Travis. I am one of the faculty advisers for the Recruitment Committee. From a research standpoint, I am focused on Inpatient Quality as well as the occasional interesting cases.
Why I chose to practice in Grand Rapids...
I joined GRFMR as faculty in 2006, shortly after moving to Michigan. I am unabashedly a transplanted Hoosier, graduating from Hanover College in 1998, Indiana University School of Medicine in 2002 and completing my Family Medicine Residency at Ball Memorial Hospital in 2005. I was drawn to FM as a specialty because I enjoyed interacting with all ages of patients, teaching them about their diseases and partnering with them in their health care. In a similar way, I have been drawn into residency education, striving to help residents grow in their knowledge and passion for family medicine.

Why I chose to practice in Grand Rapids...
I chose to practice in Grand Rapids for the opportunity to be involved in teaching medical residents and practice medicine in a progressive medical community. I also wanted to live in a city that offers a variety of activities to pursue in an urban or rural setting. This includes cultural activities such as the theater, music and arts. It also includes outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, cross-country and downhill skiing, fishing, boating or beach time. It's a very convenient location to visit other places whether driving up north or to Chicago or flying anywhere in the world.
