Our Emergency Rooms
Emergency Department or Urgent Care?
We’ve all been there as patients: sick on a weekend, unexpected injury or illness or concerning symptoms you have never experienced before. How do you determine whether you should go to your nearest emergency department immediately, or visit your local urgent care location?
If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, call 911 immediately.
Emergency Department
You should seek care immediately at your nearest emergency department if you are experiencing emergencies including:
- Severe chest pain or difficulty breathing
- Compound fracture (bone protrudes through skin)
- Convulsions, seizures or loss of consciousness
- Fever in newborn younger than 3 months old
- Deep knife or gunshot wounds
- Moderate to severe burns covering a large area of the body
- Poisoning
- Severe head, neck or back injury
- Pregnancy-related problems
- Severe abdominal pain
- Signs of a heart attack (chest pain lasting longer than two minutes)
- Signs of stroke (loss of vision, sudden numbness, weakness, slurred speech)
- Suicidal or homicidal feelings
Urgent Care
To avoid long wait times in an emergency room and reserve emergency care for those with life-threatening conditions, it is best to seek care at an urgent care location when you are experiencing conditions that are not life-threatening but still urgent. Examples of urgent but not life-threatening conditions include:
- Accidents and falls resulting in extremity or minor head injury
- Sprains and strains
- Back pain
- Breathing difficulties (mild to moderate asthma)
- Bleeding/cuts (requiring sutures)
- Eye irritation and redness
- Fever or flu
- Vomiting, diarrhea or dehydration
- Severe sore throat or cough
- Minor broken bones and fractures (fingers, toes)
- Skin rashes and infections
- Urinary tract infections
- Mild to moderate allergic reactions
- Seasonal allergies
- Headaches
Virtual Care
Some common, but still uncomfortable, conditions can be assessed by a provider virtually and do not require you to be seen in-person. Examples include:
- Allergies (seasonal)
- Back Pain
- Bronchitis
- Common Cold
- Flu (influenza)
- Minor Burns (visible on video)
- Minor Lacerations (visible on video)
- Painful Urination
- Pink eye (Conjunctivitis)
- Sinus Infections
- Upper Respiratory Illness
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
- Yeast Infections
