Natural Family Planning
NaPro Technology
Natural Procreative (NaPro) Technology is a new women’s health field that works very closely with a woman’s own menstrual and fertility cycle. Developed at Creighton University, NaPro Technology relies on more than 30 years of research in obstetrics and gynecology. The Creighton Model of Fertility Care System™ is the method of observing and charting important biomarkers of the female cycle. This charting and observational work is the basis of evaluation and treatment in NaPro Technology.
How is NaPro Technology different?
NaPro Technology is different than traditional health care in that it views fertility as a gift and state of health. A NaPro Technology physician seeks to diagnose and understand the underlying problem and applies a treatment that restores reproductive health, rather than masking or suppressing symptoms. NaPro Technology is an acceptable method for those patients that may not want to engage in artificial reproductive technologies or in vitro fertilization (IVF).
What health conditions does NaPro Technology treat?
NaPro Technology treats a wide range of female health concerns, including the following:
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding
- Chronic vaginal discharge
- Endometriosis
- Failed in vitro fertilization
- History of pre-term labor
- Infertility of an unknown cause
- Ovarian cysts
- Perimenopausal symptoms
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome
- Postpartum depression
- Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
- Recurrent miscarriage
How effective is NaPro Technology?
Research has shown that the rate of effectiveness with the Creighton Model for avoiding pregnancy is as high as 99.5%. This is comparable to the most effective prescription methods of contraception. For patients who suffer from various female health concerns such as those listed above, NaPro Technology improves the cycle to relieve symptoms.
The success rates of fertility treatment with NaPro Technology are comparable and often exceed those of in vitro fertilization, without the increased risk of multiple pregnancies or birth defects that are increased with IVF. For example, pregnancy and live birth rates after surgical and hormonal treatments in polycystic ovarian syndrome can be as high as 80%.
What can a patient expect with NaPro Technology?
Each patient in our office is evaluated individually. The initial consultation helps us to understand the patient’s medical concerns as well as any previous evaluations or treatments. We provide a thorough physical exam and may request specific lab tests.
PMS, Infertility and Most Other Issues
A thorough and detailed instruction on the Creighton Model FertilityCare System™ will be provided, to help chart biomarkers throughout your cycle. We will ask that you chart your cycle carefully during this time period. Following this initial two-month time period, we may request you take a series of hormones timed with your menstrual cycle. Depending on what we uncover, we may also order ultrasonography or other tests. A treatment plan will be developed and modified based on your response to treatment.
Postpartum Depression
Evaluation and treatment is started as soon as possible utilizing bioidentical progesterone, which will not interfere with breastfeeding. Other treatments may be used as necessary.
Menopausal Symptoms
Bioidentical hormones are used in the lowest doses possible to achieve hormone balance and wellness.
