GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (November 19, 2024) – It’s been a banner year for the Security Department at Trinity Health Grand Rapids, and the accolades keep coming in. The International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety (IAHSS) has recognized the Trinity Health Grand Rapids Security Department as a Program of Distinction, making it the first hospital in West Michigan and just the second health care facility in the state to receive this honor.
Only 74 healthcare facility security departments nationwide currently hold this recognition. To be considered for the IAHSS Program of Distinction, 70% of security officers must hold a Basic, Advanced, or Supervisor certification issued through course completion and testing through the IAHSS. Additionally, the Security Director must be a Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA), the highest level of certification for healthcare security professionals. David Kiddle, director, security and emergency preparedness, Trinity Health Grand Rapids, received his CHPA certification this past July.
“I repeatedly tell my team that my goal is for patients and visitors to tell others specifically what a great security team there is at Trinity Health Grand Rapids,” Kiddle said. “It might seem odd that patient survey responses would make note of Security, but it happens routinely which is a testament to our team’s passion and dedication.”
It’s one of the reasons The Leapfrog Group recently gave Trinity Health Grand Rapids all “A” Hospital Safety grades in its recent 2024 fall scorecard.
“I think the presence of trained security professionals on our campus under the skilled leadership of our director, Dave Kiddle, has contributed enormously to us creating a safe, healing environment for people to receive care,” said Matt Biersack, MD, president of Trinity Health Grand Rapids. “What I want people to understand is simple – if you need to seek emergency care or services on our campus, don’t hesitate – you’re safe here.”
Trinity Health Grand Rapid’s K9 program has also played a key role in de-escalating tense or violent situations. Four dogs are currently members of the security team.
“’Safety First. Service Always’ is our motto and we use it to motivate us every day,” Kiddle said. “The fact that our officers and supervisors step up every day, often times placing themselves in danger, speaks volumes to the dedication and commitment they have to our patients, visitors, and colleagues.”
