LIVONIA, Mich. (March 18, 2019) – This month, St. Mary Mercy Livonia became the first in Michigan to offer patients the Mazor X™ Robotic Guidance Platform, a new state-of-the-art surgical device that combines pre-operative planning tools and analytics with intra-operative guidance, giving physicians new spinal surgery options that promise to raise standards of care and improve outcomes.
"This technology elevates our surgical capabilities and will lead to better results for our patients," said Hazem Eltahawy, MD, chief of Neurological Surgery at St. Mary Mercy Livonia. "With this tool we receive a greater amount of pre-operative information on each patient, have an improved visual field of the patient's spine before and during surgery, and can operate with a greater degree of confidence and precision."
Minimally-invasive procedures, with their smaller incisions, can pose a challenge to surgeons due to the limited view of the patient’s anatomy. Before entering the OR, surgeons can use the Mazor X™ Robotic Guidance Platform's planning functionality to strategize an optimal surgery in a CT-based 3D simulation of the patient’s spine. In addition, computer analytics provide the surgeon with preoperative data for procedure planning and intra-operative guidance during the procedure.

St. Mary Mercy Livonia is home to a multi-disciplinary group of surgeons with expertise and experience in a variety of surgical specialties. Together this group performs hundreds of procedures each year. This includes general and minimally invasive surgeries, plastic and reconstructive surgeries and neurological surgeries, which encompasses procedures for complex spine, back and neck conditions.
