LIVONIA, Mich. – A new 124,000-square-foot health care facility, IHA & St. Joe’s Livonia Medical Center, is set to open on the Schoolcraft College Campus in spring of 2021. Schoolcraft College, Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, and Integrated Healthcare Associates (IHA) will collaborate to build this new medical center on the northeast corner of our campus that will bring leading health care providers and services to the campus, create educational opportunities for our students, and enable students to fill needed jobs in the health care industry. The facility will service the surrounding communities as well. Construction started in October; a groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday, November 18.
"We are very excited to break ground on this exceptional medical center, which is the result of our innovative partnership with Schoolcraft College," said Rob Casalou, president and CEO, Trinity Health Michigan. "This medical center, right in the heart of our service area, is the centerpiece for St. Joe's overall ambulatory care strategy in southeast Michigan."
The first phase of the new facility will include constructing an 80,000- square- foot building located on the northeast quadrant of the campus, adjacent to I-275 and just north of the St. Joe's Sports Dome. The medical center will be located on the newly renamed St. Joe's Parkway campus service drive.
"This expansive center will include primary, specialty, and urgent care; as well as ancillary and advanced imaging services including MRI, ultrasound, and mammography,” said Jason Harris, vice president of Planning and Development for IHA. “Coming together with St. Joe's as part of one health care family, we are dedicated to providing greater access to care with lower cost and higher value for patients in the communities we serve."
A subsequent phase will include an ambulatory surgery center to provide outpatient procedures, such as orthopedic and general surgeries, with the ability for overnight stays if necessary. In addition, a full-service retail pharmacy will support the surgical suite, urgent care, and physician offices as well as the entire local community. Onsite amenities, including a coffee shop, will create a comfortable waiting area for patients and their families.
Schoolcraft College currently has majors and programs in nursing, pharmacy, health information technology, and medical assisting among the many choices. The college also plans to launch an advanced imaging program for radiation technology students to coincide with the opening of the new medical facility.
“The new medical center will support Schoolcraft College’s Healthcare and Health Sciences programs with hands-on educational opportunities for students to prepare them for in-demand jobs in the growing health care fields,” stated Schoolcraft College President Dr. Conway Jeffress. "Simply put, this new medical center benefits everyone-students, staff, faculty, and especially the local community."
Additionally, as part of the ongoing collaboration between Schoolcraft and Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, construction of the St. Joe’s Mercy Elite Sports Center on campus is also underway. The 74,000 square foot multi-purpose space will be the western suburban home of the Michigan Elite Volleyball Academy, and include eight volleyball courts, a running track, soccer training space and fitness and rehabilitation space. Mercy Elite will be joining the center as well providing physical therapy, strength and conditioning and fitness training for all interested schools, clubs, teams or individuals.
In addition, a state-of-the art fitness laboratory, classroom space and faculty offices for Schoolcraft College’s Associate Degree program in Movement Science will be sharing the space to help facilitate student success. Estimated completion of the sports center is Spring 2020.
