Dr. Lloyd Geddes Jr., Executive Director, Cancer Network of West Michigan

WYOMING, Mich. (January 16, 2024) – Trinity Health Michigan and University of Michigan Health-West announced the appointment of Dr. Lloyd Geddes Jr. as executive director of the Cancer Network of West Michigan. Geddes brings over 25 years of healthcare leadership and clinical expertise to this role, enhancing the Network's capacity to provide world class, comprehensive cancer care in the region.

Founded in 2019, the Cancer Network of West Michigan is a collaboration between Trinity Health in Grand Rapids and Muskegon, UM Health-West and Michigan Medicine, the academic medical center of the University of Michigan. More than 20 specialists and subspecialists offer cutting-edge treatments, personalized care and access to the latest research, treatments and clinical trials.

As executive director of the Cancer Network of West Michigan, Geddes will serve as medical director of the Trinity Health Richard J. Lacks Sr. Cancer Center in Grand Rapids, and harmonize oncologic care across multiple centers, including the Trinity Health Johnson Family Cancer Center in Muskegon, and the UM Health-West Cancer Center in Wyoming. Geddes will also focus on enhancing and aligning cancer services with Michigan Medicine’s Rogel Cancer in Ann Arbor, where he has been appointed to a full faculty position as a clinical instructor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology.

“Dr. Geddes’ extensive experience aligns well with the Network's mission to deliver exceptional care for patients close to home,” said from Dr. Matt Biersack, president, Trinity Health Grand Rapids. “Our cancer treatment centers bridge resources for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and research, ensuring patients and families can receive exceptional care locally.”

“Cancer is a complicated disease, but we have sophisticated treatments and direct access to the University of Michigan,” said Geddes. “The Cancer Network of West Michigan offers patients access to renowned cancer research, advanced clinical trials and emerging protocols,” said Geddes.

Geddes has made significant strides in advancing cancer care throughout his career. At Methodist Cancer Institute (MCI) at Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare in Memphis from 2020 to 2023, he led initiatives treating over 3,300 new cancer patients yearly by implementing precision oncology approaches. Previously, at UP Health System in Hancock, Mich. (2013-2020), he transformed its oncology practice into a top-tier program, achieving a performance leap from the 30th to the 90th percentile. His earlier role at the Oncology & Hematology Centers of Atlanta (2002-2013) involved founding and managing a successful solo practice.

Geddes' educational background includes a medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine; he's pursuing an executive Master of Business Administration degree at Louisiana State University. A board-certified medical oncologist, Geddes holds memberships with the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American Medical Association (AMA) and American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL).

"I am honored to join the Cancer Network of West Michigan and contribute to its mission of delivering exceptional, patient-centered care," said Geddes. "My goal is to continue to elevate the standard of cancer care in Grand Rapids, the Lakeshore and beyond.”
