March 3, 2024Categories: Cancer, Women's Health
Blending more than two decades of expertise in diagnosis, chemotherapy, and surgery with profound compassion, Gynecologic Oncologist Dr. Angela Kueck now brings her exceptional talents to serve patients at Trinity Health Ann Arbor, Trinity Health Livonia, Chelsea Hospital and Trinity Health IHA Medical Group.
After completing her residency at the University of Michigan, where she often worked with Trinity Health Ann Arbor, Dr. Kueck practiced out of state for twelve years before returning to the area. What drew her back? The opportunity to help launch Trinity Health IHA Medical Group’s new gynecologic oncology program, along with “Trinity Health's academic focus and community feel,” she shares.
Learn more about Dr. Kueck in this Q&A.
What inspired you to pursue gynecologic oncology?
Dr. Kueck: I’ve always been interested in women’s health. During my OB/GYN residency, I was drawn to gynecologic oncology and patients with complex cases, especially ovarian cancer. Our subspecialty is unique; we’re the only one that delivers chemotherapy and performs surgery. I enjoy getting to know patients and supporting their journeys, from diagnosis to treatment and long-term management. I also love this field's collaborative approach – physicians, nurse navigators, infusion nurses, and others all work together to care for patients.
What principles guide your care during challenging health circumstances?
Dr. Kueck: It’s about listening and spending time with patients. Many patients are scared when they come into our office, so we aim to make them comfortable with a warm and welcoming environment. Timeliness is important too, especially in our field. We expedite things so patients are not left wondering or waiting for a diagnosis or surgery. Patients also find accessibility reassuring, so I make myself available to them through emails and phone calls.
What recent advances in gynecologic oncology treatment most excite you?
Dr. Kueck: There have been significant breakthroughs for uterine cancer, specifically in immunotherapy and targeted therapies. Promising national clinical trials are also underway for ovarian and other gynecologic cancers. We’re fortunate that Trinity Health has a robust research program, so we can help patients access those trials.
What are some of your hobbies or passions outside of medicine?
Dr. Kueck: Wellness is vital, so running and exercise are my outlets. I ran the New York City Marathon a few years ago for Team Teal to raise awareness for ovarian cancer, and I am starting a team locally through Trinity Health for the Detroit Half Marathon.
As gynecological cancers rise, compassionate care matters more than ever. "If you notice post-menopausal bleeding or pelvic pain, don't wait to seek care," urges Dr. Kueck. Though the path after a diagnosis can seem daunting, patients don’t have to walk it alone. Dr. Kueck and the Trinity Health IHA Medical Group Gynecologic Oncology team stand ready to accompany them every step of the way.
