A dental resident makes the same as all first year residents (PGY 1) residents in the hospital. This year it is about $52,000

A resident receives health insurance, dental insurance, an educational stipend of $1200 and a meal allowance of $1200 for eating in the hospital, and three working weeks of vacation. The clinic is closed on Federal holidays.

The hospital provides liability insurance for the dental residents while they are treating patients in the hospital. It is one of several reasons that no practice outside of the hospital is allowed during the time the resident is employed at Trinity Health Oakland.

Orientation begins before July 1 and the date will be determined in the spring. Generally, it is one to two weeks before July 1 and the resident is paid for that time.

No, you do not. If you don’t plan on practicing in Michigan in your career, an Educational Limited license can be obtained for you. You will want to let the Program Director or GME Coordinator know as early as possible so that they can help you obtain this license by July 1. If you don’t pass the ADEX exam, you are also eligible for an Educational Limited license till you retake and pass the clinical exam.
