The Dermatology Residency Program at Trinity Health Livingston Hospital (formally St. Joseph Mercy Livingston) is an ACGME-accredited program that began as an AOA-accredited program in 2006.

There are currently 13 residents total per academic year. Additionally, the program offers fellowships in Mohs surgery and complex medical dermatology. The teaching faculty consists of 16 attending physicians with focuses on general dermatology, contact dermatitis, dermatopathology, Mohs surgery, immunobullous disease, cosmetics, laser dermatology and skin of color. In addition to working with a wide range of faculty members, dermatology residents are exposed to multiple patient ethnicities through the academic teaching clinic located in Ann Arbor as well as private practices in metro Detroit with patient exposures exceeding 130,000 annually. In addition, residents have access to a state-of-the-art on-site histology lab staffed by board-certified dermatopathologists. The residents gain autonomy and confidence in their diagnostic and decision-making skills at the academic dermatology continuity clinic.

Residents have numerous opportunities for procedural dermatology including dermatologic surgery, Mohs surgery, chemical peels, toxin and filler injections, and laser treatments. Adjacent to the resident clinic is the dermatopathology department with 4 full-time dermatopathologists, offering a greater understanding of clinical pathologic correlations. Residents have presented at numerous national meetings including the AAD, AOCD, ASDS, ACMS and ASDP. Each year the program hosts a Michigan Dermatologic Society (MDS) meeting, one of four conducted by the major academic dermatology programs in the state. This event is a large patient grand rounds with interesting dermatologic conditions seen in the various resident clinics. Live patients are presented along with poster sessions. Over 200 Michigan dermatologists attended the meeting with presentations by guest speakers and residents. Resident didactics include weekly textbook reviews, dermatopathology slides, clinical images, and board review sessions and case discussion. Grand rounds, and journal clubs are held on a monthly basis. Moreover, residents participate in monthly business meetings focused on the key aspects of running a successful and efficient dermatology practice. The growth and success of the dermatology residency program at Trinity Health Livingston Hospital has been dependent on our dedicated, active teaching faculty.

The dermatology program at Trinity Health Livingston offers virtual clinical rotations for medical students wishing to pursue a future in dermatology. Medical students interested in pursuing a rotation are encouraged to contact the Department of Medical Education in order to set up a clinical rotation based out of the outpatient resident dermatology clinic by contacting Lindsay Zasada at Lindsay.Zasada@trinity-health.org
