Why I chose this program/location for my training

I grew up in Michigan on the east side of the state but spent many summers camping at state parks on the west side with my family. I have fond memories of visiting my siblings in Grand Rapids while they went to school at Grand Valley or Aquinas College. While going through medical school in Minnesota, I always knew I wanted to return to the west side of Michigan for my residency training. I am very excited to be joining this community and having the privilege of serving the people of Grand Rapids as a family medicine physician!

I was also drawn to this program by the wonderful residents and staff I met during my fourth year away rotation. I was so impressed by the positivity and perseverance of the interns, the leadership of the second and third-year residents, and the knowledge and commitment to learning of the faculty.

More than anything, I was impressed by the care and encouragement the residents demonstrated for each other during the sometimes-difficult moments of residency. I also believe that this program's strong inpatient service, lifestyle medicine curriculum, and robust ultrasound experiences will prepare me well for wherever family practice takes me.

I look forward to being a part of the amazing community here at Trinity Health Grand Rapids!

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

I enjoy camping, hiking and star-gazing, especially near the Great Lakes and in Michigan state parks; P.J. Hoffmaster is one of my favorites. I also am an avid gardener, jigsaw-puzzler, movie-goer and baker. I love getting together with family and friends to share a meal and play board games. More recently I've been getting into pickleball!

I first became interested in Trinity Health Grand Rapids because of its location. Coming from a small town and rotating throughout medical school in some big cities, I knew I wanted to train in a place that fell somewhere in the middle. Grand Rapids offered the amenities of a big city without the overwhelming hustle and bustle, and during my in-person visit I knew it was a city I would have no problem calling home. It also provides a proximity to water that was hard to pass up as a Nova Scotian, and I’m excited to explore the lakeside communities!

What first impressed me about this program in particular was the comprehensive approach to training and the emphasis on resident wellness. I wanted a place where I could fully explore all facets of Family Medicine and feel valued in the process. During the interview season, what sold me on the program was the unique addition of their “Theme Nights” and the people. I had the opportunity to meet the majority of the faculty and residents, as well as some graduates. The love that everyone had for their program, the city, and each other was evident and I felt a genuine sense of welcome in all of my interactions. I can’t wait to contribute in my own way to this program’s family!

I love sharing meals with my family and friends, volleyball, board games, watching cooking shows, video games, reading and museums. The program at Mercy Health Grand Rapids really stood out to me among the programs I interviewed with throughout the virtual interview experience. This program hosted Faculty Theme Nights, as well as an Alumni Night and a Second Look Event. These virtual activities helped me grasp how excellent this program is without having the opportunity for an in-person option. I was very drawn to the strong sense of fellowship I observed among the current residents during my interview process. My partner and I have called Grand Rapids home for the last four years while I was in medical school, we absolutely fell in love with the city and are so happy to continue living here! I interacted with many residents during my medical school rotations and was always so impressed by their compassion, intelligence, and skill at teaching, and I knew that was exactly the kind of physician I wanted to be. During my rotation with them, I felt so welcomed and learned so much that I knew Mercy would be a great place for me to grow as a physician and a person.

Outside of work, I enjoy playing the viola, hiking, watercolor painting, reading, playing board games, and spending time with my wonderful partner and soon-to-be dog.

Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

I chose this program because of the people and the great community feel. Being born and raised in Grand Rapids, I wanted to be able to give back to the community here. During the interview process, I was looking for a program that would have great training in both inpatient and outpatient medicine. This program has a great reputation for both, which aided in my final decision. I also enjoyed being able to take part in all of the theme nights, which truly gave me a great insight into the program. Finally, I chose this program because the residents were so welcoming and helpful.

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with family and friends. I also like to spend time golfing when the weather is warmer and watching sports.

Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

I fell in love with the city of Grand Rapids during my undergrad years and was drawn to the opportunity to return to the area for residency. I knew I wanted to train in a program that both challenged and supported me and found exactly that during my time at Mercy Health Grand Rapids in my fourth year. From the first day of my rotation, I was instantly impressed with the residents’ breadth of skills and knowledge and was in awe of the camaraderie among everyone on the team. I am thrilled to be able to return and serve the incredible community of Grand Rapids at a program that will best prepare me to do so!

I enjoy spending time with my wife, exercising and staying active, playing sports, and discovering new restaurants and breweries - especially in Beer City, USA!

So many reasons! The faculty and residents are all so kind, and this program has great opportunities in my areas of interest including palliative care, geriatrics, and women's health. On top of that, I grew up in Grand Haven (about 45 minutes west of Grand Rapids) and have always loved West Michigan, my family lives close-by, and my partner couples-matched into Mary Free Bed's PM&R program right next-door.

I love reading (typically a lot of classical literature), gardening, antiquing, cooking (and eating), and spending time with my wonderful family, partner, and friends!

I knew I was looking for a community-based program that was strong academically and would provide excellent training in both inpatient and outpatient medicine. After meeting the people at Mercy Health Grand Rapids, I was so impressed by their genuine enthusiasm and warmth. Faculty, staff, and residents seemed happy, grounded, and bright. On top of that, I am so excited to work and live in beautiful Grand Rapids!

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

Outside of medicine, I love to make/eat delicious food, hike/camp when the weather is nice, read books and watch movies, and spend time with friends and family. I also enjoy taking care of my house plants and hope to level up to gardening during residency.
