The Rise of Robotics is Transforming the Patient Experience

The use of robotics in health care is becoming common and gaining popularity, thanks to the impact on patient recovery and opportunities to improve patient experience.
Robots have transformed the operating room, for both patients and surgical teams. Robotic-assisted surgeries offer smaller incisions and a decreased risk for infection. The equipment allows surgeons to operate with precise, tremor-free movements and enhanced visuals allow access to hard-to-reach areas.
“Compared to traditional surgery, our robotic surgical platform provides patients with shorter recovery times, less pain post-operation and many other benefits.,” said Amanda McClure, MD, a colorectal surgeon and the robotic surgery physician lead at Trinity Health Ann Arbor.

Outside of the operating room, robots are helping to support clinical teams. Two autonomous robots, going by the name of “Moxi,” can be seen assisting around patient units at Trinity Health Oakland. Moxi is designed to be a nurse assistant and can navigate throughout the hospital on its own.
Moxi can retrieve and deliver patient supplies, personal care items, equipment, blood and blood products and medications to clinical staff. This allows nurses and support staff to spend more time at the patient bedside.
