Saint Joseph Mercy Health System announces new president for its Ann Arbor and Livingston hospitals

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Sept. 4, 2018) – Saint Joseph Mercy Health System today announced that Bill Manns, currently president of Mercy Health Saint Mary's in Grand Rapids, will serve as the new president of two Saint Joseph Mercy Health System hospitals: St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor and St. Joseph Mercy Livingston. Manns will transition to his new role in October once interim leadership is established at Mercy Health Saint Mary's.

Mercy Health Saint Mary's is a sister hospital of St. Joe's, part of a statewide health system created last fall when the Trinity Health-owned health systems of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System in southeast Michigan and Mercy Health in west Michigan combined their two systems to create a strong, people-centered care delivery network across Michigan.

St. Joe's Ann Arbor is a 537-bed academic teaching hospital and tertiary care center that is in the midst of a $24million Cancer Center renovation and expansion project. St. Joe's Livingston is a 136-bed community hospital with many growing services including robotic surgery, bariatric surgery, new Breast Imaging Center in Brighton and innovative short stay unit providing overnight care for outpatient procedures. In 2017, both hospitals were named to Truven's elite Everest Award winners for achieving the highest levels of sustained performance over five years. "I'm looking forward to bringing my experience leading strategy in west Michigan now to the Ann Arbor and Livingston markets," said Manns. "This kind of synergy is an example of how we are building a strong statewide system that is truly integrated with enhanced resources and clinical capabilities that we can more easily implement across the state."

Born and raised in Detroit, Manns graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in Organizational Psychology and a master's degree in Health Services Administration. He completed his administrative fellowship at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland in 1992 and, early on his career, excelled in positions of increasing responsibility at Mercy Health Services (now Trinity Health) in Novi.

His 27-year career in health care administration included operational roles at St. John Detroit Riverview and St. John

Providence in Detroit. In 2005, he moved to the west coast to become Chief Operating Officer of Alameda Health System in Oakland, Calif., where he helped lead a $23-million turnaround of the public hospital system.

He returned to Michigan in 2013 to become president of Mercy Health Saint Mary's, the second largest acute care hospital in west Michigan. Under his leadership, Mercy Health Saint Mary's has become one of the best performing hospitals in the Trinity Health's national network of 92 hospitals, and this past year it made Truven Analytics 100 Top Hospitals list. During his tenure, he has overseen numerous hospital renovations including the construction of a $50 million new surgical suite; the opening of the Mercy Health Rockford Medical complex; the opening of numerous ambulatory sites throughout West Michigan, and the current renovation of the maternity unit.

Manns currently serves on the Michigan Hospital Association Legislative Policy Panel, The Right Place Board of Directors, the YMCA Board of Directors and was appointed by the Governor of Michigan to the Public Health Advisory Council.

This announcement concludes a full search process that involved input from Saint Joseph Mercy Health System’s local board members, executive management, physician and nursing leadership and representatives from Saint Joseph Mercy Health System’s parent company, Trinity Health.

Manns will be succeeding David Brooks, who served in this position until leaving in April 2018. Alonzo Lewis has been serving as interim president and will continue at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor in his role as senior vice president of operations once Manns is in place. John O'Malley will continue as president of St. Joseph Mercy

Livingston and Brighton health center, reporting to Manns.
